Professional Background

• Chartered accountant with more than 45 years of experience in audit, corporate finance, tax and liquidation.
• Studied accounting at Nanyang University, Singapore, graduating in 1968.
• Completed his accounting degree at the University of Otago in New Zealand, then trained for four years with an accounting firm before qualifying as a New Zealand chartered accountant.
• Returned to Sibu in 1977 to establish his own practice, Hii King Hiong & Co.
• Built the firm on professionalism and integrity, serving every client with the same standard regardless of size, and with a focus on long-term relationships of trust.
• Brought his financial expertise into public service, including as a member of the Sarawak State Public Accounts Committee from 1984 to 1996.

His Journey

Finding his direction. Born in Sibu in 1945, Thomas Hii received his early education in Sibu. His studies were disrupted in 1961 by the student movement of the time. Witnessing students stand up for fairness, and how they were suppressed, gave him a deeper understanding of institutions, society and power. In 1963 he joined a private English school's pre-university class and found his way again.

Studying abroad. Inspired by classmates who won places at Nanyang University in Singapore, he resolved: “If I have the chance to go to university, I must seize it.” He entered its accounting programme in 1964 and graduated in 1968. But the degree was not recognised by the government at the time, so he could not practise as an accountant.

A second start in New Zealand. Undeterred, he went to New Zealand. After a difficult start at the University of Auckland, he moved to the University of Otago and earned his accounting degree in two years. “Studying in the West helped me see the world anew and reflect on my own limitations,” he recalls.

Coming home. After four years of training with an accounting firm and qualifying as a chartered accountant, he returned to Sibu in 1977 and founded his own practice. That same year he married his wife, whom he had met in New Zealand. Together they raised four sons.

Public service. In New Zealand he met Sarawak political leader Dr. Wong Soon Kai, a meeting that led him into public life. Believing that real change comes through institutions, he joined SUPP on his return and served as a Sibu Municipal Councillor and later as State Assemblyman for Meradong. When he lost his seat in 1996, he turned his energy back to his profession and community. “Not holding office does not mean one cannot fulfil one's responsibilities,” he says.

A lifetime of service. Now past 80, he remains active in his profession and community. His eldest and youngest sons have both entered the accounting profession, continuing the practice he built.

Achievements & Contributions

• Founder of Hii King Hiong & Co., Sibu, in 1977.
• Sibu Municipal Councillor (1982–1984) and deputy chairman of the council's General Purposes Committee.
• Sarawak State Assemblyman for Meradong, elected in 1983 and re-elected in 1987 and 1991.
• Member of the State Public Accounts Committee (1984–1996); Deputy Chairman of the Meradong and Julau District Council (from 1987); board member of the Sarawak Land Custody and Development Authority.
• Community leadership: led the Nanyang University alumni association, served in Chinese community organisations, and chaired a co-operative society for decades. Currently Acting Chairman of the Meradong Foochow Association and appointed a community leader (Pemanca) in Bintangor.
• Author of a personal anthology, Book of Thomas Hii King Hiong (许庆轩文集), and a travel book on his first visit to China, 走马看花话中国.
